Some Cracking Is Normal

Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures, so tiny amounts of cracking are almost unavoidable. A few fine hairline cracks along a control joint are nothing to worry about. Wide, uneven, or spreading cracks are where you should worry, and it usually points to something that happened before, during, or after the pour.

Poor Ground Preparation

This is by far the most common culprit. Concrete needs a solid, well-compacted base to sit on. If the ground underneath hasn’t been properly prepared or drained, the slab has nothing stable to rest on, and it will eventually settle unevenly. No matter how good the mix is, it can only ever be as strong as the ground beneath it.

Skipping Reinforcement

Steel mesh and fibre reinforcement give concrete something to hold onto as it shrinks and moves, keeping any cracking fine and controlled. Without it, the natural stresses that build up as concrete cures have nowhere to go, and cracking is usually the result.

The Wrong Mix or Poor Timing

Using a mix that isn’t suited to the job puts unnecessary strain on the slab from day one. Weather matters too. Concrete that cures too fast in hot, dry, or windy conditions loses moisture too quickly and shrinks unevenly, while freezing conditions can weaken it from within before it’s had a chance to set properly.

Missing Control Joints

Control joints give concrete a planned place to crack, rather than leaving it to happen randomly. When joints are left out or badly spaced, the concrete has nowhere predictable to release that stress, so it finds its own way instead.

Loading It Too Soon

Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it’s poured, even once it looks solid. Driving vehicles or placing heavy loads on it too early can cause cracking that a little patience would easily have avoided.
